An allergy to antibiotics can be defined as any adverse effect from consumption of antibiotics which deviates from the expected effects. Antibiotics are drugs that are used to deal with the disease causing bacteria. But over usage of antibiotics can cause certain harmful effects. Antibiotics are one of the most commonly administered drugs to children. There are some antibiotics that can trigger some adverse chemical reactions in the children. These symptoms include swelling of affected body parts, redness of the eye, itching sensation, patches on the body, and certain rashes on the skin.
Allergy caused due to antibiotics may not be that severe and can be cured with certain medical intervention. But in certain cases, asthma can be caused which can cause a lot of trouble to the children. Still worse, certain antibiotic allergy may even result in anaphylaxis. This is a life threatening disorder and has many serious implications. This may cause breathing problems and swelling of respiratory tract.
Thus, whenever the doctor recommends antibiotics to children, he must first know the complete history of the child and all the products that the child is allergic to. Even parents have to play a key role in making sure that they keep track of all the allergens and ensure that the child is kept away from those allergens. |
