Allergy Shots: What do this term mean?

When medications fail in controlling allergy, an allergist may recommend immunotherapy or allergy shots. This treatment comprises of a series of injections. They do not completely cure allergies but reduce the sensitivity to certain substances. In rare cases many allergies have been completely resolved. People who have severe allergies or allergy symptoms for over three years each can use allergy shots. Allergy shots can be given for allergic rhino- conjunctivitis, allergic and insect sting allergies. The first shots contain very tiny amounts of the antigen to the person who is allergic. With gradually increasing dosages over time, your body will adjust to the antigen and become less sensitive to it. Allergy shots are the only available treatment that can adapt the natural course of the allergic disease. It’s a fact that allergy shot will help most in a positive way; however, they are not right for everyone. It is not advisable for people who are suffering from severe heart problems, asthma or other respiratory problems. Children under five years of age should never be exposed to this treatment procedure.
