Decongestants and allergies: do they work?

Decongestants are one of the best and safe ways to eliminate the symptoms of allergy especially nasal allergies. The body accumulates more blood in the nasal region in order to trap allergens when affected by an allergy. Due to this, that area gets swollen and inflammation occurs. This generally leads to excessive production of mucus. All this will result in nasal congestion and the flow of air through nasal gets limited.  In such scenario, decongestants help in opening the swollen passage. It gives you relief from runny nose and will let you breath easily. They are quite effective in treating the nasal allergies even if one takes after being in contact with an allergen. Decongestants also work wonders when taken in combination with antihistamines.  Decongestants mainly shrink the nasal tissues and blood vessels which have swollen due to allergens. This will make smooth way for the passage of air and relieves from other symptoms also like redness, inflammation and mucous secretion.

It constricts the blood vessels and decreases the production of mucous in the nasal. They are available as tablets and capsules or in the form of sprays and drops. Any type of form is equally affected for the patients affected by allergies.
