Diphenhydramine interactions with other medications

Diphenhydramine is a strong medicine predominantly used for hindering the effects of histamine, a chemical in the body. It is basically an antihistamine and is used for the treatment of allergic reactions like runny nose, sneezing, rashes, watery eyes, itching, common cold and other symptoms of minor allergies. This medicine is easily available through nonprescription, however, it is better to consult a doctor before consuming it, especially in conjunction with another medicine. It is important to learn that the interaction of this drug with other medicines is not always safe and could prove disastrous to the health. For example, the conjunction of Diphenhydramine with monoamine oxidase inhibitor proves extremely dangerous to the body. This interaction may lead to unwanted side effects like glaucoma, stomach ulcer, enlarged prostate, bladder disorders with difficulty in urinating, overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), hypertension or forms of heart problems.

However, doctors do recommend the intake of this drug along with oral medicine dedicated for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. The combination of these medicines proves effective at eliminating muscle stiffness, tremors and other symptoms of this disease. Further, this medicine bears hypnotic properties and thus can be used with sleeping pills, tranquilizers, anti-depressants, pain killers.
