What Is Drug Allergy?

Drug allergy is caused when allergic reaction is caused due to the intake of medications. Over counter drugs and prescription drugs both are main culprit for causing drug allergy. Rash, hives and fever are the main symptoms of drug allergy. Mistake is often made while categorizing allergic and non allergic drug reactions because they both usually have similar symptoms. However both these types of reaction can result in dangerous and life threatening conditions. Feeling dizzy, fever, anaphylaxis, skin rashes, swelling of face and shortness while breathing are some of the main symptoms experienced by a person suffering from drug allergy.

A person must seek emergency treatment when he experiences symptoms such as lightheadedness, feeling of unconsciousness and rapid pulse. Antibiotic allergies are often caused due to penicillin and antibiotics containing sulfonamides. Allergies caused after vaccination are called as vaccine allergy and are often caused due to ingredients such as neomycin present in vaccine. Intake of several types of drugs together, a person suffering from other types of allergy and hay fever are some of the risk factors causing drug allergy. Drug induced anemia, anaphylaxis and serum sickness are some of the complications associated with drug allergies. The treatment of drug allergy aims at reducing the intake of drugs and medications.
