Decongestants charge up the stimulators present in the sympathetic nervous system in order to shrink the nasal tissue and blood vessels. This will help in the reducing the production of excess fluid and mucus in the body. As the swelling reduces due to shrinkage, nasal passage opens up and thus the symptoms are reduced.
