Sinusitis is an inflammation caused to the cavities adjacent to nasal cavities. These are called as paranasal cavities. There are many factors which can trigger sinusitis in a person. These factors include infections like viral, bacteria or fungal, allergic reaction, autoimmune reaction. In almost all the cases of sinusitis the inflammation of the sinuses occur along with nasal inflammation and thus it can also be referred as rhino sinusitis.
Depending upon the cavity that sinusitis affects it can be categorized as maxillary sinusitis (pressure in cheek area), ethmoid sinusitis (pressure between the eyes), frontal sinusitis (pressure above the eyes), sphenoid sinusitis (pressure on the upper part of the head).
Sinusitis leads to inflammation of airways and therefore the symptoms are often like that of chronic cough and/asthma. Depending upon the duration for which sinusitis affects the person, it can be categorized as acute, subacute and chronic. In acute form sinusitis takes around 4 weeks to be fine. In case of subacute sinusitis the problem lasts between 4-12 weeks. And in case of chronic sinusitis, the problem remains for a period of at least 12 weeks or reoccurs every now and then.
In general, sinusitis leads to symptoms like discomfort, nasal discharge, congestion, facial pressure, choked nose, cough, tiredness.
