Comparison between food allergy and intolerance

Food allergy and food intolerance are often confused with each other even though they are completely distinct as far as the cause and reactions in the body are concerned. This confusion arises as the symptoms of both the problems are quite similar. Here is a comparison:

  • Most of the adverse reactions can be attributed to food intolerance. Food allergies are very rare as compared to food intolerance.

  • Food allergies involve the immune system where as food intolerance does not. In the case of a food allergy, the body produces antibodies. This reaction does not take place in case of food intolerance. Also, there is no histamine reaction in the case of food intolerance, which on the other hand characterizes a food allergy.

  • Food intolerance has more to do with the gastrointestinal system unlike food allergy. In food intolerance, the patient is incapable of processing a certain kind of food due to various reasons like enzymes, digestive heath.

  • Food allergy symptoms show up very quickly. On the other hand, food intolerance symptoms are rather show in surfacing up and might even take hours and weeks before they are fully visible.
