The medications to be used for sinusitis depends on the kind of infection i.e. whether fungal, bacterial or allergic. In case of fungal infection, antibiotics won’t work. Rather antifungal medications, corticosteroids, surgery can impart relief.
If the sinusitis is due to bacterial infection then following are the medications which may be used in combination or isolation:
Antibiotics like amoxicillin are helpful in killing the bacteria.
Decongestants like oxymetazoline hydrochloride and phenylephrine hydrochloride are used for clearing up the nasal passages.
Corticosteroids such as beclomethasone dipropionate monohydrate help in reducing inflammation in airways and nasal passages.
Pain killers also help in bringing down discomfort and pain.
Mucolytics help in thinning of the mucus.
In case, when the sinusitis problem is due to allergic reactions then along with medications that are used to treat bacterial sinusitis infection, the doctor recommends allergy shots on regular basis.
It is vital to note that the course of medication as prescribed by the doctor must be completed and the medications should not be stopped in between just because the symptoms or effect have reduced. Depending upon the intensity of the problem the duration of the medicated treatment for sinusitis is prescribed. It may be a short duration treatment or a long one. |
