Pollen and Seasonal Allergies |
Pollen is responsible for a huge fraction of all seasonal allergies. So what exactly is pollen? Pollen refers to the small oval grains produced by plants for reproductive purposes which are dispersed in the air. On contact with pollen, some people experience adverse allergic reactions. Pollen and other such substances which can potentially cause an allergy are known as allergen, pollen itself being the most common allergen, especially during the spring season when plants are in full bloom. Pollen allergies are further divided into two sub groups depending upon whether they are caused by pollen from trees or grass. In spring time, allergies are caused by pollen from trees where as during summer it is caused due to pollen from grass. During autumn, allergies are caused by pollen from weeds. The best way to avoid pollen allergies is simply to avoid the allergen, pollen itself. Keep the house clean and avoid opening windows during spring. Do not use flowers in the house if you are allergic to pollen. Try to stay indoors in the mornings as that is the time when pollen activity is highest in the atmosphere. Instead of opening the windows, it is preferable to use the air conditioner. |
