Signs of food allergy

Food allergy manifests itself in the form of a number of symptoms. Some of these are listed below:

  • Angioedema: This refers to the swelling up of the soft tissue of the face, tongue, lips and eyelids. This leads to difficulty in breathing and swallowing.
  • Hives.
  • Nausea and relates symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, stomach cramps. Together, these symptoms are called gastrointestinal hypersensitivity.
  • Itching of the mouth, eyes, skin, and throat.
  • Wheezing, difficulty in swallowing, shortness of breath and scratchy throat.
  • Nasal congestion
  • Anaphylaxis: It is a severe reaction which occurs throughout the body and can also result in death.
  • Other symptoms are hypotension and unconsciousness.

Food allergy symptoms are often seen in people with the atopic syndrome, which refers to a combination of diseases like eczema, conjunctivitis, allergic rhinitis and asthma. This syndrome is usually hereditary in nature and if there is a family history of these diseases then one is very likely to have the atopic syndrome. In such cases, the best way out is to avoid foods which contain the allergen proteins. If any of the above mentioned symptoms are seen then one must consult the doctor at the earliest.
