Using steroid nasal spray for allergies: does it work?

Steroid nasal sprays are touted as the best first line treatments for congestion, inflammation, swelling, itching and other allergies inside the nose. These medications are counted among the strong healers of allergic reactions of sorts. They prove effectual by preventing the chemical process responsible for the increase in inflammation level. These sprays are often recommended by doctors for inhibiting the re-growth of nasal polyps, especially after being removed by surgical ways initially. The major constituent of these sprays is corticosteroids which are anti-allergens synthesized from the combination of three drugs, namely, hydrocortisone, cortisone and prednisone. These sprays offer immediate relief as they are sprayed directly into the affected area of congestion or inflammation. One simply needs to gently sniff the medicine inside, without exerting much pressure in inhaling the nasal medicine.  

Though the steroid nasal sprays are considered the best treatment for allergies, one needs to be cautious of their side effects. These medicines may cause discomforting side effects like bleeding, irritation. Sometimes, these drugs may also result into the thinning of bones and in rare cases, high blood pressure. In case, any of these side effects are observed it is advisable to immediately stop the application of these medicines and bring the matter to the notice of the doctor.
