If you have a sun allergy, the first step in the treatment is the prevention. Reduce your exposure to sun to prevent your sun allergy symptoms from worsening. Most of the remedies and treatments of sun-allergy is depend on its type and its level of seriousness.
- PMLE. If the symptoms are mild, you can use cool compresses to the areas of itchy skin rash, or cloud your affected skin with sprays of chill water. Nonprescription oral antihistamine is also recommended to treat these symptoms as it helps to relieve itching, or you can even try cream containing cortisone. For severe symptoms, consult a dermatologist to prescribe better oral antihistamine or corticosteroid cream. If these remedies are not worked on you, your doctor may recommend phototherapy.
- Actinic prurigo (hereditary PMLE): Some of the remedies for this type include antimalarial drugs, thalidomide (Thalomid), corticosteroids, PUVA and beta carotene -.
- Photoallergic eruption: Here, the first treatment is to find and remove the medicine that is responsible for allergic reaction. Most of the skin symptoms are treated with a corticosteroid cream.
- Solar urticaria: If the hives are mild, you can apply a nonprescription oral antihistamine to palliate itching, or try some anti-itch skin cream that contains cortisone. For severe hives, your dermatologist may advise a prescription-strength corticosteroid or antihistamine cream. For extreme cases, phototherapy, PUVA or antimalarial drugs are the best remedies.
